I am about to graduate from college and I have been thinking about opening my own business. Do you think it is premature or that it's an option to consider? What should I research to know if I'm ready? Rebecca Miller It is a great option to consider. According to the Census Bureau, small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms. This means that most businesses in the US are small businesses. Also consider that nearly as many businesses fail as succeed. So do your research carefully. First, research the business opportunity with your business school; this is a valuable resource center at the tips of your fingers. This resource is free and convenient for you as a college student. Second, visit your Small Business Development Center (asbdc-us.org). Use the many websites that are free, including the Small Business Administration site (sba.gov), that help you plan your business from the beginning to expansion. After you have researched your ideas, develop a solid business plan; this will be your guide and strategic plan to success. Talk to experienced entrepreneurs and discuss the challenges. Most importantly, know yourself and listen to yourself. You will be the best judge on your willingness and readiness to take this risk. You must jump in with both feet; recognize that there will be a few years of financial sacrifice and a lot of years of hard work. Visualize the rewards: Independence, Independence, Independence.
